US government creates AI tool to monitor critical voices

The US government is spending taxpayer dollars to fund “AI” tools to censor people critical of government policies, and at the same time trying to hide this from the public.

This came out in an interim report put together by the House Judiciary Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government Committee.

It names the National Science Foundation (NSF) as the vehicle the administration uses to bankroll the development of these tools, by approving grants to various recipients. The report further alleges that Big Tech comes in by deploying those tools.

The NSF is also accused of going as far as to come up with a “blacklisting strategy” meant to target media organizations that try to shed light on NSF’s activities that result is censorship, and propaganda (i.e., promoting certain viewpoints and suppressing others).

The censorship industrial complex is how opponents refer to these goings-on that involve the government, non-profits, tech giants, and schools like the University of Michigan, the University of Washington, the University of Wisconsin, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

The report specifies that the roots of this NSF-led mass censorship effort can be traced back to the pandemic and the 2020 presidential election, while the justification is, as ever, “misinformation.” The term has alarmingly frequently come to mean, “information the government doesn’t like.” But that would be unconstitutional, hence the necessity to involve private companies with huge influence on public opinion, according to those accusing the government and Big Tech of collusion.

The subcommittee’s report gives credence to this interpretation of the situation, as it notes that the grants worth many millions declaratively go toward “combating misinformation.” But in reality, the document continues, “the purpose of these taxpayer-funded projects is to develop AI powered censorship and propaganda tools that can be used by governments and Big Tech to shape public opinion by restricting certain viewpoints or promoting others.”
